Quick Answer
Which burglar deterrents actually work?
The deterrents that reliably discourage burglars are the ones that increase visibility and effort: motion-activated exterior lighting, visible security cameras, reinforced door frames and deadbolts, shrubbery trimmed back from windows, and a home that looks occupied while you travel. Alarm signage helps only when a real system backs it up. Tactics that do little on their own include dummy cameras, hiding a spare key outside, and leaving one light burning continuously, which signals absence rather than presence.
